SRGC NEWSLETTER
Rancho Solano was hot, which was appropriate for the DEVIL BALL! There were about 30 players – not every team came in with the Devil Ball – a couple were lost to Water and a couple to Weeds! Everyone seemed to have a good time – the trick was to drink a lot of water and if possible run thru an occasional sprinkler…. which is what I wanted to do but Bud wouldn’t stop the cart for me!
I have a request from our Tournament Director, Tom Baker. PLEASE complete your individual scorecards, sign the scorecards, and then deliver them to the scorer's table BEFORE taking your clubs to the parking lot. This will allow us to have the results completed and announced in a timelier manner.
Our
next tournament is fast approaching – July the 13th at Wildhorse
in Davis. Tom says to get your entry forms in ASAP – he has to give the course
a count by next week (the 6th) and so far only he and Dave Ewing are
playing! I promise Tom - our check went in the mail today!
This
tournament is also a qualifier for the seniors, 2-person best ball; so
get your partner lined up. Details and dates are on the entry form, www.1ar.com/srgc/.
Speaking
of Qualifiers…
Our
4-man team played their match at Turkey Creek on June 8th. The team consisted
of: Dan Hunter, Jeff Silver, Al Edwards and Tom Baker. I was able to chat with Dan at the R.S.
tournament about his experience.
Dan had never played at a qualifier before and said that overall it was a Great experience! He also said he had a Horrendous day! He had a major case of “nerves”. He said the worst part of the day was “letting my team down.” (I was told by other teammates that he did NOT!). The BEST part of the day was his approach shot on #9. He hit the ball from 140 yards out and missed the hole by only 1 inch!
A
little extra info on Dan: He started golfing about 20 years ago. He and his buddy, Norm
Sherman (right?), were softball coaches and had both hit a few golf balls
before. They just up and decided to go play a game of golf for the heck of it.
Dan has never had an official golf lesson and joined the SRGC about 6 years ago
when his buddy Jeff Sutter talked him into it.
The 2-man
Qualifier was played at Wildhorse on May 18th. Jon Kaempfer and Dan
Garcia represented the SRGC. They ended up shooting a 65 but the cut-off for
the next level of play was 64. According to Jon the worst part of the day was
getting a 1 stroke fine for slow play. Jon said they had never been given any
warnings about slow-play fines. The day got better when he protested the ruling
and won! The best part of the day was the guys that they were teamed up with.
Jon said they were a couple of very nice guys and they all had a great time
even if they didn’t golf as well as they had hoped.
Welcome
to Phil Fetty – he has officially joined as of this month!

Astonishing golf fact from my little book: I just opened the book randomly to this page…golfing can be more dangerous and gory than you realize. “In 1951, Edward M. Harrison was playing alone at the Inglewood Country Club in Seattle when he apparently broke the shaft of his driver. The split shaft pierced his groin. He tried in vain to reach the clubhouse, finally collapsing and bleeding to death 100 yards from the 9th tee.”
