SRGC April/May 2008

TOURNAMENTS

The golf tournaments seem to be going along pretty well. We had a nice turn-out for Castle Oaks in March. We have traditionally started our year with Castle Oaks in February but changed things this year because Empire Ranch has better drainage. Those of you who went to both of those tournaments probably saw first-hand the wisdom of that change. Empire Ranch was in very nice condition for us in February despite the recent rains. And Castle Oaks, which is usually pretty soggy, was also in pretty good condition.

April’s tournament was held at Turkey Creek. We had enough people play that there were 4 flights! We also had 9 teams trying to qualify for the NCGA Associate Club Team Championship. The two low teams will represent SRGC at the local qualifying round. Congratulations to our Associate Club Team Qualifiers! They were Jeff Sutter, Dave Sutter, Terry Siler and Kathy Donnell both teams qualified with a very nice round of 60!  They will be playing their next round at Haggin Oaks on May 28th.

The May tournament will be held at Ancil Hoffman on May 22nd. The format this month will be Low-net and NCGA 4-Ball Qualifier (2-person team). The low team only qualifies. Be sure and send in your forms into Tom Baker as soon as possible.

MEMBER NEWS

We also had 2 new members at Turkey Creek this year; WELCOME to both Garrett Morgan and Jason Savorn!

Leo Niles was sporting a new hairstyle at Castle Oaks. His daughter is fighting breast cancer and in a demonstration of his support for her he has shaved his head. Please keep Leo and his family in your thoughts and prayers while they wage their battle.

Bud & Margie Randolph’s Scotland Adventure

As most of you know Bud and I missed the Turkey Creek tournament because we were in Scotland. We were able to get a tee time on the Old Course, so as much as we hated missing the SRGC tournament, we felt we had to go. We expected absolutely horrible weather since we were going to be in Scotland in the first part of April. The morning of “The Day” started very early. We had a 7:40 tee time and we awoke to a cloudy, cold day. We all put our layers on and off we went. It sprinkled on us for the first hole after that it was just cloudy and cold. It wasn’t even windy! Bud started the day by hitting his first ball OB. On the 4th hole he finally hit a beautiful drive and his caddy said “Ahh, you’re back!” I started the day by telling my caddy that I wanted to lighten the mood and tension around so I was going to start by hitting a “special” golf ball – a BRIGHT yellow Sponge Bob Square Pants golf ball! It worked! If my caddy said “hit the ball there” I did! I only got in one bunker, the biggest of them all – Hell on the 14th hole and it only took 3 tries to get out! I finished the day with a 97 – net 68! The Old Course has a slope of 145 and par 76 for women!  The next day we played the New Course – all those bunkers I missed on The Old, I hit on The New. All those beautiful straight shots on The Old went sideways on The New. Bud, on the other hand, could do no wrong. The wonderful game of golf!

Golfing at St.Andrews was an amazing experience – so much more than I expected! If you get the chance, DO IT! Oh, and get a caddy – the course is pretty squirrelly!
