SRGC July 2008

The Ridge – The course was in good shape this year BUT after the tournament we found out they were having a function…or was it the bartender was leaving early? Anyways – the bar was closed so the only drinks available were sodas and beer. A bit disappointing to a few of our club members. Our Senior qualifier winners were Dave Sutter and Norm Sherman. First Alternate Jon Kaempfer and Kathy Donnell.
Our next tournament will be held on July 17th at Teal Bend. It will also be the Net Amateur Qualifier. Please get your entry forms in to Tom Baker as soon as possible.
Associate 4-Ball Qualifier: Our team of Dale Kuroda and Jason Savorn shot an impressive 59 at the semi-finals at Teal Bend on July 2nd. They have now qualified to play in the 4- ball finals which are at Spyglass on August 4 & 5.
From my book Astonishing but True Golf Facts by Allan Zullo
* It’s a two-stroke
penalty to touch any impediments in a hazard, but sometimes players forget
where they are. Like Steve Elkington, who was waiting for a ruling at a
tournament in Sweden in 1990. Bored with the wait, he reached down and pulled
out a blade of grass to chew on. That cost him two strokes, which translated
into the loss of $5,000 when the tournament was over.

* At the 1979 U.S.
Open at the Inverness Club in ?Toledi, Ohio, the USGA was appalled that golfer
Lon Hinkle had found a significant shortcut for playing the par-5 8th
hole – by deliberately hitting to the 17th fairway. Overnight, the
officials planted a 24-foot Black Hills spruce to try and bock any further such
shots. It failed, but it did inject some humor into a rather dull Open.
July appears to be another lean month for birthdays - HAPPY BIRTHDAY to:

8th -Jim Sroka
25th – Scott Williams
SRGC Handicap Chairman – Tom has been saying that this is going to be his last year as our Handicap Chairman (he’s already extended his term by a year once). If anybody is interested in taking over for Tom PLEASE contact him. I’m sure he can answer any and all questions you might have about the job.
