SRGC August 2008

Does anyone else ever wonder why we play golf? It really is an odd game. You take a little ball and hit it hundreds of yards with long misshapen sticks to try and put it into a 4 inch hole! Then you are given a book with a TON of very complex and convoluted rules to abide by. It’s hard enough to reach the hole but then you’ve got to deal with lakes, sand traps, bushes, trees, rocks, etc. One of the things you hear people whine about quite often is that EVERY hit counts the same whether it be ¼ of an inch or 240 yards! That really doesn’t seem fair. But then, why should it, it’s golf! There are actually MANY reasons to play golf: The only person you’re really competing against is yourself. You can play with people of all skill levels. The people that play golf are usually friendly and polite. The scenery of each course is different and quite often SPECTACULAR. You get to play outdoors where you can enjoy the game and the company.  You also get to watch the variety of wildlife that inhabits the course (No, not the humans! The deer, fox, birds etc.) in their natural surroundings. IF you hit a good shot the other players will be happy for you and if you hit a really bad one they’re sympathetic….after all everyone else out there has “been there, done that”! If you mess up a shot then you have the opportuniy to make a remarkable recovery shot. The reason we all keep coming back for more? That one MAGNIFICENT shot that you know you can repeat if given just one more chance!

GOLF…what a great game!

The NCGA Four-ball Associate Club Championship was played at Spyglass on August 4-5. Our club was very well represented by Dale Kuroda and Jason Savorn. They shot a  66-64–130 coming in 9th out of 56 teams. They were only 8 shots out. Good job guys!

This should be quite the week for Dale; 2 days at Spyglass then, if I remember correctly, I believe he is on his way to Scotland to play The Old Course.

Our August tournament will be held on August 21st at Apple Mountain. The format? Low net and DEVIL BALL! Last year, for the very first time in SRGC history, NO ONE brought back the Devil Ball. In fact the LONGEST any team kept the ball was the 6th HOLE! If you haven’t signed up to play yet, do so. We need a few more players so we have a chance on beating The Mountain rather than being beat up by it!
