Last month
was Devil Ball at Apple Mountain. Unlike last year, we actually had a couple
of teams that brought their ball back. I had an interesting day at Apple
Mountain this year. I didn’t play TOO badly…..except for 1 hole…..
On hole #11
a 273 yard par 4 it was my turn for “the devil ball”. I hit my drive to the
left and was behind the big pine tree (1) so I had to chip out (2) for a shot
at the green. I then tried to hit a ball to the green…I chunked it into the
gully (3 in 4 out)….Kathy found it so I walked back to the drop area and hit
again….into the gully (5 in 6 out)…Kathy found it again and threw it back to
me….I hit it…into the gully (7 in 8 out)…Kathy AGAIN found it and threw it back
to me…I “hit” it again…into the gully…sigh….(9 in 10 out)….I changed clubs and
actually HIT the ball…it sailed the green and landed in a hole (11)…I chipped
it out of the hole (12)…then I chunked my chip (13)….I FINALLY made it to the
green (14) and 2 putted for a 16!!!!
On the bright side….we were all laughing by the time the gosh-durned Devil Ball
made it into the hole and since I got 1 pop on that hole we only had to record
a 15 for the Devil Ball!
Oh! Did I
tell you? I had brand new golf clubs that I had just picked up the day before
AND remember that bandage on my right finger? I found out on Friday that it
wasn’t just a bad cut/bruise, I had actually broken it when I slammed it in the
car door on Wednesday! In fact, I’ve been off work since the 24th –
it’s hard to wash your hands well enough to care for patients when you’ve got a
splint on your finger. So, I’ve decided to blame my bad day on the clubs and
the broken finger!
I also
forgot to mention that we kept that silly devil ball until Kathy totally miss
hit her tee shot on 18 and sent it flying into the woods. We looked for it but
never found it despite all the other balls we found. If I remember right Kathy
found at least 23 balls while searching for that very elusive devil ball.
I hope to
get redeemed at Pacific Grove.
Congratulations go out to Scott Williams. He made the cut for the Associate Club Net Amateur
Championship Qualifier at Ancil Hoffman with a 71. I’m not sure when he plays
his next round but when I found out I’ll let you all know. In the meantime good
luck Scott on your next game.
